Malaysia has a lot of grocery stores options to choose from. While some of these supermarket chains are spread across East and Peninsular Malaysia, others are only located in a particular region.
I personally shopped at a lot of these supermarkets during my travel through Malaysia in 2023.
The following is a list of grocery store chains in Malaysia in no particular order and not comprehensive by any means.
NOTE: I do my best to provide accurate information, but things like locations data will likely change after publication.
1. AEON
AEON is a massive retailer across Asia. In Malaysia, AEON is split into the following brands.
- 35 AEON Store locations which are supermarkets
- 28 AEON Mall locations which are entire indoor malls, most with AEON Store supermarkets
- 21 AEON BiG locations which are hypermarkets (supermarket + department store)
- 9 AEON MaxValu Prime locations which are premium supermarkets
AEON supermarkets are located in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Johor, Perak, Melaka, Penang, Negeri Sembilan, Kelantan, and Sarawak.
2. Cold Storage
There are 2 Cold Storage supermarket locations in East Malaysia, specifically in Putrajaya and Kuala Lumpur. The Cold Storage in Kuala Lumpur City Center is prominently located in the Suria KLCC shopping mall under the Petronas Towers.
3. Giant
Giant is a hypermarket that was founded in 1944 in Kuala Lumpur as a grocery store and has since expanded to 77 locations in Malaysia. Additionally, Giant also has 12 Giant Mini locations in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor.
Giant hypermarkets also exists outside of Malaysia and can be found in Singapore and Malaysia as well.
4. Jaya Grocer
Jaya Grocer is a Malaysian supermarket chain with over 40 stores in Peninsular Malaysia. This supermarket chain is fairly new with the first store opening in 2007.
5. Lotus’s
Lotus’s is a Thai supermarket chain headquartered in Bangkok that also exists across Malaysia.
After acquiring and rebranding Tesco in 2020, Lotus’s operates a total of 64 stores in Peninsular Malaysia.
6. Mercato
There are 8 Mercato supermarket locations in East Malaysia with 2 in Penang, 1 in Johor Bahru, and 5 in Kuala Lumpur, one of which (Mercato Pavilion) is prominently located in Bukit Bintang.
7. Village Grocer
Starting as a small grocery store in Kuala Lumpur in the 1950s, Village grocer has grown to 25 supermarket locations.
Village Grocer stores can be found in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Johor, and on Penang Island.
8. Isetan
Isetan is a Japanese department store with three locations in Malaysia, specifically in Kuala Lumpur—Isetan KLCC, Isetan The Gardens, Isetan Lot 10.
The Isetan flagship store in Kuala Lumpur City Center is prominently located in the Suria KLCC shopping mall under the Petronas Towers.
9. Ben’s Independent Grocer
Ben’s Independent Grocer has 5 grocery store locations in Malaysia specifically in Kuala Lumpur, Johor, and Selangor. B.I.G. was founded in 2011 and aims to be a one-stop eat, drink, and shop avenue for foodies,
10. Mydin
Mydin, Malaysia’s largest Halal hypermarket and retail chain, was was founded in August 1957. You can find 22 Mydin Hypermarket locations in Terengganu, Melaka, Kelantan, Johor, Perak, Negeri Sembilan, Selangor, Penang, and Kedah.
